I have been involved in real estate and stock/bond market investing since 1978. In 1984 I left money management firm Connor, Clark and Company in Toronto to found Roderick MacIver & Co. Inc., an investment advisory firm in New York City focusing on distressed and deeply-undervalued securities. Roderick MacIver & Co. Inc had over 100 institutional and corporate clients who paid between $10,000 and $60,000 a year for my firm's research. See 1987 Barron’s article.
Seeking a quieter life, in 1990 I moved to the Adirondacks in upstate New York. A couple of years later I founded Heron Dance Press, a nonprofit publisher of books and journals, that explored through art and words, various perspectives on the gentle arts of a well-lived life. Most of the books sold out and were republished by North Atlantic Books, an affiliate of Random House. Many are still available on Amazon. In ten years, Heron Dance Press revenues grew from nothing to over $1 million, giving me an understanding of what it means to run, as opposed to analyze, a business.
In 2014, I began the transition to full time investing. Roderick MacIver & Co. Inc. was formed in 2016 as the corporate entity for my consulting, research and writing. I continue to invest in real estate.
I divide my time between North Ferrisburgh Vermont, a home in New York’s Adirondack Park and Amelia Island in Northeast Florida.
